Part 1. 10 Adele's CD Albums Fans Must Own
One: 21
Following up a hugely successful debut album is a difficult task, email Duffy for more details. Adele had no such problems though and this album released in January 2011 took her career to another level. It proved to be an extremely personal piece of work as Adele was writing the songs after separating from her partner. Anger, revenge, heartbreak, self-examination and forgiveness all shine through in this great album. Tracks such as 'Someone Like You' and 'Rolling in the Deep' made this the UK's biggest selling album this century.
Two: Skyfall
Bond movies have produced some classic theme tunes over the past fifty years and Adele's contribution is right up there with the very best. The opportunity to record a Bond theme song also gave Adele a chance to reach a whole new audience and it certainly didn't hurt her album sales. Written by Adele and Paul Epworth 'Skyfall' captures the mood and style of previous Bond themes. It nearly created history too reaching number two in the UK Charts but still no Bond theme has made number one.
Three: 19
The debut album that launched Adele's hugely successful career. Released in 2008 it topped the UK charts and won her the Grammy Award for Best New Artist. The album richly deserved the positive reviews that it received from critics around the world as it went on to sell more than 7 million copies. A star really was born when this was released.
Four: Someone Like You
One of the most personal songs on her '21' album, inspired by a broken relationship and how she came to terms with it. The second single from the album and it became her first UK number one. Fans couldn't help falling in love with the song after a stunning performance at the 2011 BRIT Awards. The heart-breaking song features just Adele and a piano, little else was required for this stunning single to be a hit around the world. It was voted third most favourite single of the last 60 years in the UK.
Five: Chasing Pavements
Her second single from '19' was released in January 2008, reached number two in the UK and gave Adele her first top 40 hit in the States. It won her the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. It was another song that had great personal meaning written after she discovered a former boyfriend had cheated on her so she hit him and got chucked out of a pub. By the time Adele got home she'd written most of this classic hit.
Six: Cold Shoulder
The third single from Adele's debut album was released in March 2008. Unlike other songs on the album it was produced by Mark Ronson. It features stunning lyrics such as: "Don't turn it round on me like it's my fault. See I can see that look in your eyes. The one that shoots me each and every time." Another deeply personal song from a singer who it appears hasn't had that much luck in relationships but used that misfortune fully to her advantage.
Seven: Set Fire to the Rain
This single from '21' only reached number 11 in the UK. Everyone was already buying the album by the sackload. It gave Adele her third consecutive number one in the States and was a massive hit around the world. It's Adele trying a power ballad with a wall of sound compared to other stripped down songs on her albums. Adele says she got her idea for the song when her cigarette lighter stopped working when it was wet.
Eight: Make You Feel My Love
A rare cover version by Adele and was included on her debut album. This was written by Bob Dylan in the 1990s and has been recorded by several artists including Billy Joel and Garth Brooks. It became the fifth single to be released off '19' and reached number 26 in the UK charts in 2008. It's returned to the charts on several occasions due to it being a popular song choice for contestants on 'X-Factor' and 'Britain's Got Talent' and hit the top ten in 2010. In all the song has spent 56 weeks in the UK top 75.
Nine: Hometown Glory
This is where it all began for Adele, the very first song that she ever wrote. It took her all of ten minutes to write after her mother tried to persuade her to leave her home town of West Norwood in London and go to university. It was initially released as a limited 7" vinyl single in 2007 with just 500 copies available. The song eventually became the third single from '19' and received a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance losing out to Beyonce's 'Halo.'
Ten: Rolling In the Deep
This massive hit topped the chart in eleven countries around the world but it's a song that surprised Adele. She admits that there are notes in this song she never knew she could reach. The song was composed while Adele was on tour in the US and was inspired by a tour bus driver. It took Adele and song-writing partner Paul Epworth just an afternoon to complete. With its gospel links the song became a massive crossover hit in the States selling over seven million copies.
